SAN DIEGO (AP)– A Marine Corps fighter jet clashed in mid-air with another plane throughout a refueling operation in a remote desert location of Southern California Tuesday afternoon. The pilot ejected and the other aircraft landed securely, the armed force said.

The F-35 B jet collided with a Lockheed Martin KC-130 J tanker around 4 p.m., according to a statement from the Marine Corps Air Station Yuma in close-by Arizona.

The jet pilot “ejected effectively and is currently being dealt with,” the declaration stated. It didn’t provide other details.

The other plane supposedly had 8 crew members on board. None were hurt.

The F-35 B is a single-seat combat aircraft that can remove and land conventionally and vertically. That aircraft crashed near the Salton Sea, an inland lake about 100 miles (160 kilometers) northeast of downtown San Diego.

The four-engine turboprop tanker landed in Thermal, a small desert city in Riverside County about 125 miles (200 kilometers) northeast of downtown San Diego.

Images from the scene posted online by NBC Palm Springs show a military plane on its tummy in a farm field near Thermal Airport.

The reason for the crash is under examination.

It wasn’t instantly clear whether the planes were on a regular mission or a training exercise.
