AT&T brings 5G to Austin, Miami, Salt Lake City, and 25 other regions

AT&T’s low-band 5G network is expanding to 28 brand-new regions today, including Austin, Miami, Dallas, and Salt Lake City. If you’ve been waiting on a minor speed boost over your present LTE connection and have a 5G-compatible phone, you might wish to examine if your area belongs to this most current growth.

Technically, we’re talking about AT&T’s low-band 5G network, which has slightly much better speeds and latency compared to 4G LTE. When OpenSignal evaluated 5G speeds from significant phone carriers in downtown cities over the winter season, it found AT&T’s low-band download speeds averaged 59.3 Mbps. The low-band network is not to be puzzled with AT&T’s 5G Plus, a high-band network with mmWave frequencies, which provide far much faster web speeds than low-band offerings– sometimes over 1Gbps The business also uses another “5G” choice: 5G E. But that’s not genuine 5G at all, but rather a slightly much faster variation of LTE. Yes, it’s all a little confusing.

My coworker Chaim Gartenberg did a robust explainer on 5G earlier this month and described that although 5G, in basic, will add to and improve cellular innovation, it provides a lot of tradeoffs due to how 5G radio’s electro-magnetic spectrum works, how costly 5G smart devices are, and the restricted range of 5G network coverage.

The brand-new addition brings AT&T’s overall number approximately 355 protection locations, though its big milestone was in April when the provider introduced its low-band 5G in 137 brand-new cities including Atlanta, Baton Rouge, Nashville, and Tallahassee. The carrier’s appealing nationwide 5G by the end of the year. Here’s the complete list of all the locations now providing low-band 5G beginning today:
